NIELS ROEST (1996), ROTTERDAM, NL.
Niels Roest’s artistic practice focuses primarily on the relationship between observations made in the perceivable landscape and technical research on the photographic medium. He explores alternative forms of documentation through installations and writing, which opens a dialogue between perception and interpretation.
His creative efforts are aimed at interfering with the apparent transparency of photography as a medium, emphasising its status as a means for visual representation. In doing so, he is giving form to a visual vocabulary characterised by the exclusive use of black and white. As an artist, Niels tries to find a balance between attaining an honest position in his relationship with the viewer and the expression of reality through the lens of his subjectivity.
